Zircon

Natural zircon is a zirconium silicate with exceptional brilliance and dispersion — close enough to diamond that it fooled buyers for centuries — and it should never be confused with cubic zirconia, which is a laboratory imitation. It is also the oldest mineral yet found on Earth; zircon crystals from the Jack Hills in Australia have been dated at 4.4 billion years. Sri Lanka’s Ratnapura gravels, Cambodia’s Ratanakiri, Myanmar and Tanzania supply the market. White zircon is the accepted budget substitute for diamond and is offered at Kanjanur. It suits Rishabam and Thulam natives, and is often the practical recommendation for a customer who needs a Sukra stone of prescribed carat weight at a workable price.
