Pearl (Muthyam)
Pearl is the one gem of the Navaratna that is grown rather than mined — layer upon layer of nacre deposited by an oyster around an irritant. The Gulf of Mannar off Tuticorin was one of the ancient world’s great pearl fisheries and supplied Roman and Pandya trade for centuries; today natural and cultured pearls come from the Persian Gulf, Japan (Akoya), Australia and the South Seas. Sacred to Chandra, it is offered at the Kailasanathar temple in Thingalur. Kadagam natives, ruled by the Moon, benefit most, and it is also recommended for Mesham, Viruchigam and Meenam. It is worn for peace of mind, emotional steadiness, restful sleep, and a strong bond with one’s mother.
