Lapis Lazuli

Lapis lazuli is not a single mineral but a rock — deep blue lazurite flecked with golden pyrite and white calcite. Nearly all fine material still comes from a single place: the Sar-e-Sang mines of Badakhshan in Afghanistan, worked continuously for over six thousand years and the source of the blue in Tutankhamun’s mask and, ground into ultramarine, of the blue in Renaissance painting. Chile and Russia supply lesser grades. Assigned to Saturn in most Indian practice, it is offered at Thirunallar and suits Magaram and Kumbam natives. It is worn for truthfulness, scholarship, disciplined study and clarity of expression, and is popular with teachers, writers and those preparing for examinations.
