Ruby Stone (Manik Stone)
Ruby is red corundum, the same mineral family as sapphire, coloured by traces of chromium and second only to diamond in hardness. The finest stones come from the Mogok valley of Myanmar, whose deep “pigeon’s blood” red remains the global benchmark; important modern supplies come from Mozambique, Thailand and Sri Lanka, with Indian deposits in Karnataka and Odisha. As the gem of Surya, it is presented at Suryanar Kovil near Kumbakonam — the only Navagraha temple with separate shrines for all nine planets. Ruby is worn above all by Simmam natives, whose lord is the Sun, and suits Mesham, Viruchigam, Dhanusu and Meenam. It is traditionally chosen for those seeking authority, confidence, recognition in public life, and harmony with father and elders.
