Tourmaline

Tourmaline has the widest colour range of any gemstone family — a single crystal can grade from pink at one end to green at the other, the famous watermelon pattern. It is also pyroelectric: warm it and it attracts ash, a property Dutch traders in the eighteenth century used to clean their pipes. Brazil’s Minas Gerais is the great source, including the electric neon Paraíba variety, alongside Afghanistan, Nigeria, Mozambique and Indian deposits. Because the planet follows the colour, tourmaline is unusually flexible in prescription: green for Mithunam and Kanni, pink for Rishabam and Thulam, black for Magaram and Kumbam — each offered at the temple of its own planet. Black tourmaline in particular is worn for protection and shielding from negativity.
