Turquoise

Turquoise is a hydrated copper aluminium phosphate, opaque and waxy, in colours from robin’s-egg blue to green depending on how much iron replaces the copper. The finest — Persian turquoise from Nishapur in Iran — has been mined for more than three thousand years and sets the standard for even sky blue without matrix; Arizona, Tibet and the Sinai are the other classic sources. Treated as an affordable stand-in for yellow sapphire, it is offered at Alangudi. Dhanusu and Meenam natives suit it best. It has been worn as a traveller’s amulet across Asia for centuries, and in some traditions is assigned to Venus rather than Jupiter — a point worth mentioning honestly to customers, since practice genuinely varies by school.
