Agate

Agate is banded chalcedony, laid down in volcanic cavities in concentric layers that give each stone its distinct rings and eyes. India holds a special place in its history: the Ratanpur mines near Khambhat in Gujarat have been cut and traded for over four thousand years, making it the oldest continuously working agate industry on earth; Brazil and Uruguay supply the modern bulk. Green and moss agates are read as Mercury stones and offered at Thiruvenkadu, while black-and-white Suleimani agate is worn for Rahu and offered at Thirunageswaram. Mithunam and Kanni natives suit the green varieties; Magaram and Kumbam suit black agate. It is worn above all for grounding, protection and warding off drishti or the evil eye — which is why it is so common in children’s jewellery.
