Sun (Surya)

Surya is the atmakaraka — the significator of the soul — and governs the father, authority, government service, bone and heart health, self-confidence and one’s standing in the world. A well-placed Sun gives recognition and leadership; a weak or afflicted Sun shows as low confidence, friction with the father or with superiors, and blocked promotions. The temple is Suryanar Kovil at Aduthurai near Kumbakonam, built by Kulothunga Chola I in the twelfth century and unique among the Navagraha sthalams in giving all nine planets their own separate shrines. Surya rules Simmam, is exalted in Mesham and debilitated in Thulam, and completes the zodiac in one year.
