Emerald (Maragatham)
Emerald is green beryl, coloured by chromium and vanadium. Almost every emerald carries internal fissures and inclusions — the jardin, or garden — and these are accepted as proof of natural origin rather than treated as flaws. Colombia’s Muzo and Chivor mines produce the most saturated stones, with Zambia offering cleaner bluish-green material and further sources in Brazil, Afghanistan and Rajasthan. As the gem of Budhan, it is offered at Swetharanyeswarar Temple, Thiruvenkadu. Mithunam and Kanni natives, both ruled by Mercury, are the primary wearers, and it suits Rishabam, Thulam, Magaram and Kumbam. It is chosen for sharpness of intellect, fluency of speech, success in trade, accountancy and communication, and for children who struggle with studies.
