Cat’s Eye (Vaiduryam)

True cat’s eye is chrysoberyl containing dense parallel needle inclusions that throw a single sharp band of light across the dome when cut as a cabochon. In the best stones the band snaps open and shut as the gem is rocked, and one half of the dome glows honey while the other stays dark — the milk-and-honey effect that grades the finest material. Sri Lanka is the classic source, along with Kerala and Odisha in India, Brazil and Madagascar. As the gem of Ketu, it is offered at the Naganathaswamy Temple at Keezhaperumpallam near Poompuhar. It is worn during Ketu dasa, for protection against sudden loss and hidden enemies, and by those on a spiritual path, Ketu being the karaka of detachment and moksha.
