Yellow Sapphire (Pushparagam)

Yellow sapphire is corundum in shades from pale lemon to deep golden, owing its colour to iron. It is hard, brilliant and — unlike emerald — usually eye-clean, which makes it one of the most wearable of the Navaratna. Sri Lanka’s Ratnapura fields have supplied the classic soft-gold Ceylon stones for centuries; Madagascar, Thailand and Myanmar are the other major sources. Sacred to Guru, it is offered at Apatsahayesvarar Temple, Alangudi, whose Guru Peyarchi festival draws lakhs of devotees. Dhanusu and Meenam natives wear it as their lord’s stone, and it suits Mesham, Kadagam, Simmam and Viruchigam. It is the stone most often prescribed for delayed marriage, particularly for women, and for wisdom, teaching, wealth and progeny.
